Whether they're part of your daily uniform or a way to stretch your style, there are many closet staples that stay in heavy rotation.
For this ongoing and regularly updated feature, we've put together 3 Looks that are each centered around one core item. From the mighty white tee to a great jacket and the many possible layers between, we'll show some of the ways to mix it up...
Sweatpants are the most relaxing way to relax. And with some of our top designers putting in the work to transform them into a premium product, sweatpants are ready to go places that they’ve only dreamed about on all those lazy Sundays. Pictured above are the black and grey versions of the Visvim Sport Sweat Pants made in a luxury superfine merino wool for year-round activity. Last two pics are the Samuel Zelig Ballet Embroidered Sweat Pants that are built from a heavyweight French Terry.

Overalls. Because they’re probably the most workwear of all workwear designs, overalls can feel a bit challenging to some. But they’re just not. They’re about the easiest thing there is. Throw ‘em on and go; it’s a full kit right there. Whether you pull them on for style or functionality, they look right with a tee or any combination of heavier gear. In the right hands or by the right designers, they can style further afield. By manipulating the shape and fabrication, Kapital’s take on overalls has a lot in common with suspender trousers. And with all the added elements inherent in any overall design, pulling together something complimentary can go many directions.
Shoes are the last thing you put on in the morning before stepping out. As such, they often get last consideration for pulling the fit together. That works fine if you’ve got a hundred pairs to choose from, but for almost everyone, shoes are the smallest collection in the wardrobe and are therefore the limiting factor. One way to think about dressing like you mean it is to put your footwear first and build up. While you probably can’t put your shoes on before your pants, having a clear idea in mind of the colors, shape and design of your shoes helps ensure they play nice when it’s time to lace up.
Thankfully, the fashion world is catching up to what sneakerheads have known for decades - the more colors and technical elements, the more options you have for styling. If you want to let your feet do the talking, stick to your uniform basics like jeans and a clean, white tee. Or you can keep the spotlight on your feet, but still dress it up with clean lines and natural colors. Sometimes though, when you’re feeling especially gregarious, mixing complementary elements from head to toe is sure way to turn heads.
Recently, we picked up some pairs from Salomon Advanced - one of the longest running alpine sports outfitters in the world. And that leads to these trail-hungry, asphalt eating, stride-sipping, stripe champs. Wearing technical shoes in different walks of life takes just a little bit of extra forethought.
An unstructured blazer can be tossed over just about anything. Whether you’re staying home or headed out the door, it’ll add layers of style and function to whatever you’re doing. They have a formal heart, but with pockets to stuff and plenty of buttons to play with the shape, there are enough styling options and details to keep it relaxed.
And no one dives deeper into the details than Engineered Garments does. Our perennial favorite, the Loiter Jacket is a true wardrobe transformer with more than meets the eye - straddling the line between casual and dressed-up. The best part is seeing what fabrics they’ll be cut to.
With jeans, your favorite workwear, fresh and clean to relax a tailored fit, or ready to lounge, it’s the most versatile thing in the closet and deserves its own stack. New and bright or beaten around, they’re part of everyone’s uniform.
Find your favorite fit and keep it comfortably cool in a white tee.
Grunge was great and lumberjacks know a thing or two about working hard, but flannels are much more than just an icon of loud music and yelling timber. They’re also soft, warm, long-lasting, look good on everyone and - depending on how you style them - incredibly versatile in any closet.
