Accessories

A young boy stuffs his pockets with shiny found objects, shells, cool rocks, bits of string, and bottle caps.  These are the essential forms of currency he carries as baseball cards fup fup fup in his bicycle spokes on his way to neighborhood trade.

As we get older, those forms of payment are condensed into a few pieces of plastic that we wrap up in leather and stick in our back pockets, leaving room for other essentials that we identified over the years.  Only the most useful and versatile things have remained, replaced when we find a better version of the same, but it’s the same cast of characters.
