Canoe Club Sweats
Putting together a great core of basics and keeping them stocked (as much as possible) has been a goal of ours since nearly the very beginning. When you love clothes as much as we do, that’s not a simple endeavor.
But we’ve finally put together a set of sweats that include all the details we’ve been looking for.
Look One
Look One: Canoe Club Crewneck and Sweatpant in Heather Grey paired with some New Balance XC72s in Sea Smoke/Nimbus Cloud.
Great fitting sweats can be surprisingly tough to find. We found the perfect balance of traditional sportswear favorites and blended in some modern touches. It’s hard to describe what makes these garments so sought after, but it is somewhere in the old-school fit, great color from years of wash, and kisses of distressing from wear.
These are the types of things we were looking for when hunting in vintage shops, so we made it easy for you by making sure that those elements shined in our first Canoe Club Basics.
Look Two
Look Two: Canoe Club Crewneck and Sweatpant in Natural paired with Visvim's Skagway Lo G. Patten shoes in Black/White.
First off, let’s talk about crewneck sweatshirts. Right away, these are reminiscent of college life and/or the blanks that are used for travel souvenirs. Because of that, they’re often well-worn pieces of personal nostalgia. We positioned the “Canoe Club” logo on the chest like those classic collegiate sweatshirts and used a typeface our staff developed that was inspired by vintage sign painting calligraphy.
Getting them to feel right was the next step. Pre-washing the cotton makes these super soft and then we added a light amount of distressing to make them feel like they’ve been in the rotation for years. Maybe we’ll add more colors in the future, but we kept to the most classic white and heather grey for this round.
Look Three
Look Three: Canoe Club Crewneck in Natural and Sweatpant in Vintage Black paired with some New Balance 574s in Black/White.
Sweatpants. Everyone loves sweatpants, but some aren’t suited for going out and can look a little lazy. Finding a great fitting sweatpant is the key, but can be surprisingly tough. We found balance by keeping some of the traditional qualities we love in the classics and then blended in some luxury.
Beginning with the fabric, we’ve used a mid-weight cotton terry that is super soft while still being substantial enough to wear outside the house. Then each pant has been washed down to get even softer and to add a bit of fading and subtle distressing throughout. The cut is a relaxed taper that is tailored without being too slim on anyone. They end at the ankle with a vintage style elastic cuff. Then the extra details to round ‘em out: slash pockets at the sides, a rear patch pocket, and a thick drawstring waist. These are exceptionally nice.
Look Four
Look Four: Canoe Club Hoodie and Sweatpant in Vintage Black paired with some HOKA ONE ONE Kaha 2 GTX in Black and Visvim Skagway Lo G. Patten shoes in Black/White.
When looking to replace a favorite hoodie, finding a vintage one isn’t likely. It’s not something that people get rid of. They work in every wardrobe and for every walk of life. Even if it’s not on your back right now, chances are that you keep it close by.
We were very serious when designing a hoodie. With a slightly oversized vintage fit and just a hint of distressing throughout, this hoodie will only get better the more you wash and wear it. To get it started out right from the get-go, we pigment dyed these. Pigment dyeing garments gives them a softer hand and vintage appearance and the seams and thicker areas develop tonal gradation that only results in reactive dyed garments after long years of wear. These have been cut to a boxier fit because comfort is the true baseline of a hoodie.
